May · Streaks in dry air

What should I use on Wolf stainless in Colorado's dry air?

Use a stainless cleaner that says nonabrasive, on a soft cloth that sheds no lint. To bring the shine back afterwards, wipe lightly with a microfibre dampened in water and dry it off with a polishing chamois, following the way the grain runs. Marks that outlast all of that are worth a look: Wolf Repair Denver, (720) 575-1433.

Dry air changes the job rather than the products. At this elevation the water in a damp cloth is gone off a warm panel in seconds, so whatever was dissolved in it — minerals out of the tap, a smear of cleaner — stays behind as a mark instead of leaving on the cloth. That is the whole of the difference, and the answer is small sections, each one dried before you move along.

How to do it

  1. Find the grain before you start

Hold a panel at a low angle to the window and fine parallel lines show up running one way. Across a range front they usually run side to side, and along a handle they run its length. Everything after this follows those lines.

  2. Clean first, polish second

The cleaner lifts what is sitting on the steel; the damp microfibre and the chamois are what make it look right again. Polishing without cleaning spreads a thin film around, and in this air the film sets before you catch it.

  3. Work small and dry as you go

Half a door at a time. Denver takes the water off a warm panel faster than you can wipe it, and a surface left to dry itself is where the streaks and the chalky rings come from.

  4. Treat hard-water marks on their own

For hard-water stains Wolf gives white vinegar and water, rinsed and dried at once, in the line about the burner pan. On the big steel faces stay with the stainless cleaner and go round twice rather than reaching for anything stronger.

Past that point it is a tool-and-meter job. Call Wolf Repair Denver on (720) 575-1433 and we will bring the parts that fault usually needs.

Asked about this one

Will a hard-water spot etch the steel if I leave it?

Left long enough the mineral film dulls the finish and gets harder to shift, which is why the guidance is to rinse and dry at once rather than later. What does the lasting damage is the scouring people reach for at that stage. If a mark has beaten two careful goes, ask Wolf Repair Denver first.
