A hood is a blower, a control and a duct, and the duct is the part nobody looks at. Most "the hood is not working" calls in Denver are airflow rather than electrical: a grease-packed wheel, a flexible run with three bends it did not need, or a recirculating liner in a loft whose charcoal has never been changed.

Noise without capture is the classic sign of a blower fighting its duct. We check the run, the baffles and the filter condition before quoting a motor, because a bigger blower on a bad duct is just louder.

A downdraft that rises part way and stalls
Lift motor, drive belt or a bent guide — often something heavy has leaned on the vent while it was up. The motor is the expensive part and the track is the part that usually caused it to fail.

The downdraft would rise halfway and stall. A worn lift motor, and a guide bent by something heavy leaning on it. He changed the motor, straightened the track, and it glides up and down again.

Our loft hood recirculates. Is that why it never clears the air?
Partly. A recirculating liner can only filter, not exhaust, and charcoal is spent long before it looks it. Fresh charcoal, washed baffles and the speeds set correctly gets most of the performance back.
Can a hood be vented into the attic?
No. Grease-laden air in a roof space is a fire and moisture problem, and we find it in older houses more often than you would like. The fix is a proper run to the outside, which we quote as ductwork rather than a part.
