What it usually turns out to be
A hood is a blower, a control and a duct, and the duct is the part nobody looks at. Most "the hood is not working" calls turn out to be airflow rather than electrical: a wheel packed with grease, a flexible run carrying three bends it never needed, or a recirculating liner whose charcoal has never once been changed.

Loud, and the kitchen still fills with smoke
Noise without capture is a blower fighting its duct. The run, the baffles and the filter condition all get checked before a motor is quoted, because a bigger blower on the same bad duct is simply a louder version of the problem you already have.

A downdraft that rises part way and stalls
Lift motor, drive belt, or a guide that something heavy leaned on while the vent was up. The motor is the expensive part and the track is usually the reason it died, so replacing one without straightening the other buys you a repeat visit.

A blower that hums and then stops
Either a thermal cutout tripping on a wheel loaded with grease, or a capacitor that no longer starts the motor cleanly. From the switch they are indistinguishable. The wheel comes out and gets cleaned, and the capacitor gets measured rather than guessed at.

Grease dripping back out of the liner
Baffles fitted the wrong way round, a missing grease cup, or a run that slopes back towards the kitchen. The last of those is installation rather than a part, and you will be told so plainly instead of being sold a filter.

Loft with no outside wall to duct through, so the hood recirculates. It had stopped pulling anything and the filters were a solid mat. New charcoal, baffles washed, speeds set where they should be.

Partly. A recirculating liner filters rather than exhausts, and charcoal is spent long before it looks spent. Fresh charcoal, baffles washed properly and the speeds set to suit the run gets most of the performance back, without touching the blower.
Can a hood be vented into the attic?
No, and we find it in older houses more often than anyone would like. Grease-laden air in a roof space is a fire risk and a moisture problem at the same time. The fix is a proper run to the outside, quoted as ductwork rather than as a part.
