Wolf GR366 problems: what usually fails?

A GR366 is thirty-six inches wide with six sealed burners and a single gas convection oven, and almost everything that goes wrong with one happens on the top. The pattern to listen for is whether one burner ticks or all six do at once, because that single question separates a ten-minute clean from a part. Ring Wolf Repair Denver on (720) 575-1433 and say which it is.

Six-knob stainless range with the front-left burner fully stripped to its machined base, brass orifice and two igniter electrodes standing clear, cap resting on the deck
A burner stripped to its base A burner taken right down to the base. Orifice in the middle, electrodes at the edge, nothing else to it.
  1. The burner base, with the brass orifice in the centre of it. Gas leaves the range here and nowhere else.
  2. The cap, lying where it was put down. It has to go back flat, and the right way up.
  3. The perforated cover on the back wall of the cavity, with the convection fan behind it.

The GR366 is the body we are called out to more than any other in this city, and the reason is simply that there are a lot of them. Thirty-six inches is the width that fits a Denver kitchen without a remodel, six burners is the number people want, and there is no module on the top to complicate it. It is the plainest range in the series.

That plainness is why the fault list is short. There is no griddle thermostat, no charbroiler igniter buried under a grate and no second oven cavity. What you have is six identical burner assemblies, one module firing all six electrodes, six valves behind six knobs, and one oven. Work out which of those four things the symptom belongs to and the diagnosis is most of the way done before anybody arrives.

The one thing worth knowing that is not obvious from looking at it: the burners are not all the same. The back left is the small one. Every complaint about “that burner has never been as good” turns out, on a GR366, to be the smaller burner doing its job.

What it usually turns out to be

Every figure below is a band, not a quote. The fault is found first, the number is agreed with you second, and nothing is ordered until you have said yes to it.

  • One burner ticks, the other five light normally

UsuallyThat burner is wet or dirty. Dry it, clean the cap and the ring under it, and sit the cap back centred and flat. Wolf names a hair dryer on a low setting for the drying, which is as involved as this job gets.

Quoted from Igniter or spark module $180–$470

  • Turn one knob and all six start ticking together

UsuallyThe spark module fires every electrode on the top at once, so a fault there shows up on all six burners rather than one. Cleaning changes nothing here; the module is read and replaced as a part.

Quoted from Igniter or spark module $180–$470

  • The burner catches with a thump

UsuallyGas gathering for a moment before the spark reaches it. Either the electrode has drifted out of position or the ports nearest it have crusted over. It is startling, it is fixable in one visit, and it should not be lived with.

Quoted from Igniter or spark module $180–$470

  • The lowest notch still holds a rolling boil

UsuallyCheck first that the simmer range is being entered at all: down to the detent, push, keep turning. If it is, then the valve or what is reaching it is the question, and that gets measured rather than guessed.

Quoted from Burner valve or orifice service $240–$610

  • A knob has gone stiff or will not spring back

UsuallyHardened grease in the valve stem. Wolf's clicking checklist includes pushing the knob in and watching it spring back, because a stem that stays pressed leaves the igniter calling for a spark that is never needed.

Quoted from Burner valve or orifice service $240–$610

  • Six burners are fine and the oven bakes cool

UsuallyOn an all-gas body the oven is its own system, and a cavity sitting under the dial is a sensing or a burner question. It is measured through a whole preheat against a reference, because a swap without a measurement only moves the error.

Quoted from Oven thermostat or sensor calibration $220–$470

Still wondering

Is the GR366 the same range as the GR364G?

Underneath, largely. Both are thirty-six inch bodies over one gas convection oven. The difference is the top: a GR366 gives you six burners, a GR364G trades two of them for an infrared griddle. Which you have decides whether a griddle page or a burner page is the one you want.

Why is the back-left burner weaker than the rest?

Because it is a smaller burner. Wolf publishes the rear left at 9,200 Btu and every other burner on this top at 15,000, so it is doing exactly what it was built to do. Use it for the pan that wants holding rather than the one that wants boiling.

Should the cap really come off for cleaning?

Yes, and it is the single most useful thing an owner does on a GR366. Caps lift straight off cold, wash with detergent, and go back centred and flat. Wolf's own troubleshooting starts there, before any part is named, for erratic flames and poor ignition alike.

How long does a spark module take to sort out?

One visit, on a body this common. The value of describing the pattern on the phone is that Wolf Repair Denver can arrive with the part already on the van rather than diagnosing it, ordering it and coming back. Call (720) 575-1433 and say whether one burner ticks or all six.
