Does a Wolf gas range need a high-altitude kit in Denver?

No, and it is worth being clear about it, because a lot of money gets spent otherwise. Wolf states that its natural gas ranges work up to 8,600 feet with no adjustment at all, and that its LP ranges need no conversion either. Denver sits around 5,280. If yours is misbehaving, tell Wolf Repair Denver on (720) 575-1433 what the flame is doing and we will find the real cause.

As close as this set of pictures gets to a single burner: orifice, electrodes, and the seat the head drops onto.

There is a version of this story that gets told in Denver kitchens every year: the range arrived set for sea level, nobody adjusted it, and that is why the simmer is useless. It is a good story and it is not true of these ranges. Wolf’s own installation guide sets the line at 8,600 feet, and the whole city is well under it.

What is true is that a bad low setting is very common here, and that it almost always has one of three ordinary causes: the simmer part of the knob travel never being used, a cap not sitting flat on its burner, or a supply that is not holding up. None needs a kit. All three are settled in one visit, and two you can check yourself in ten minutes.

What it usually turns out to be

Every figure below is a band, not a quote. The fault is found first, the number is agreed with you second, and nothing is ordered until you have said yes to it.

  • The low setting still boils a heavy pan

UsuallyMost often this is the simmer range never being reached at all. It is not further down the same travel: you turn to the stop, push the knob in, and keep turning, and only then does the flame drop onto the second tier of ports.

What it costs Nothing, once that check is done

  • Flames lean and tip yellow across the whole top

UsuallyWolf puts indoor humidity, dust and fumes from building work, dirty or badly seated burner parts, and the wrong gas type or pressure at the head of this list. It also asks whether a second regulator has been added outside a range that already has one inside.

Quoted from Burner valve or orifice service $240–$610

  • One burner has always been weaker than the rest

UsuallyWolf publishes one pair of outputs for this family, and they are not equal: the rear left burner is the small one at 9,200 Btu and every other burner on the top is 15,000. A quieter back-left burner is the range working as designed.

What it costs Nothing — the range is behaving as built

Still wondering

So the range was never converted for Denver. Is that a problem?

Not at this height, no. A conversion kit exists and is worth asking a Wolf dealer about above 8,600 feet, which is well clear of anywhere in the city. Below that line the range leaves the factory ready for the air it will be cooking in, and nothing needs swapping.

Then why does cooking here feel different?

Because the food behaves differently, not the burner. Water boils cooler, batters rise faster and sugar work moves quicker, which is a recipe question rather than a repair one. What the range owes you is a steady flame and a usable low setting, and both of those are checkable.

My range is on propane. Does that change the answer?

Only to make it simpler. Wolf states plainly that LP gas ranges do not require conversion for altitude. What propane does change is the flame itself: a little orange tipping is normal on LP, where on natural gas it would be worth a look. Ring Wolf Repair Denver if you are unsure which you have.
