Wolf GR486C charbroiler or burner trouble?

The GR486C divides its forty-eight inches between six sealed burners and an infrared charbroiler, and those two halves fail in quite different ways. Settle which one you are describing first: a burner knob turns through a range of settings, the charbroiler knob has two positions and nothing in between. Then call Wolf Repair Denver, (720) 575-1433, and say which.

Pro-style range with the oven door open and the convection fan cover on the rear wall, one burner cap off and the brass orifice showing, rack and wrench on the floor
One cap away and the brass orifice is readable — the last fitting the gas passes before it meets the air.

An owner learns this range as two appliances that happen to share a fascia. On the left of the complaint sit six burners that behave exactly as burners do on any body in the series: caps that must go back flat, a spark at each one, a valve behind each knob. On the right sits a module with ceramic tiles, a blank-off plate, a heavy grate and a single high setting, which almost nothing else in a domestic kitchen resembles.

Keeping them apart on the phone saves a visit. A burner that will not light and a charbroiler that will not light are not the same fault with different hardware; they are different parts, cleaned differently and reached differently. The question we ask first is simply which knob you had your hand on.

The charbroiler also carries the one requirement on this body that is nothing to do with cooking. Wolf’s installation note asks for non-combustible materials around charbroiler models where there is no hood above the range, alongside forty-two inches of clearance from the countertop. If your kitchen was reworked around the range rather than the other way about, that is worth a look before anybody blames the module.

What it usually turns out to be

Every figure below is a band, not a quote. The fault is found first, the number is agreed with you second, and nothing is ordered until you have said yes to it.

  • The charbroiler clicks and carries on clicking

UsuallyThe plainest entry on Wolf's own troubleshooting list: the knob is not all the way round to Hi. There is nothing between off and full on this module, and a knob parked in between keeps the spark running with no gas to catch.

What it costs Nothing, once that check is done

  • It sears beautifully in the middle and poorly at the edges

UsuallyLook for the blank-off plate that came with the range. Wolf asks for it to sit centred on the ceramic tiles for even cooking, and it is the piece most likely to have been left in a drawer after a clean.

What it costs Nothing, once that check is done

  • The charbroiler lit before the deep clean and will not now

UsuallyThe igniter sits right where hands go when the frame, plate and grate are put back, and Wolf warns to keep clear of it during assembly. A module that worked an hour ago is checked there before anywhere else.

Quoted from Igniter or spark module $180–$470

  • The cabinet or shelf beside the range has discoloured

UsuallyThat is an installation question rather than a repair one. Where no ventilation hood hangs above, Wolf wants forty-two inches of clearance from the countertop and names charbroiler models as needing non-combustible materials.

Still wondering

Can I put a pan or a griddle plate on the charbroiler?

No. Wolf is direct about it: food goes straight onto the charbroiler grate and cookware does not belong there. The burner underneath throws intense heat at whatever is above it, which sears meat and does very little that is good to the base of a pan.

How long should the charbroiler preheat before I cook?

Ten minutes, with the ventilation running. Push and turn the knob fully round to Hi, listen for the igniter clicking until it catches, then leave it alone. Most complaints that the charbroiler cannot sear turn out to be food going on after four or five minutes.

Underneath the top, is this the same range as the GR486G?

Largely, yes. Same forty-eight inch cabinet, same six sealed burners, same pair of oven cavities behind the fascia. The module is the difference, and it is a real one, because a charbroiler is cleaned, assembled and quoted differently. Ring Wolf Repair Denver with the code and we will start in the right half.
