Nov · Pots boiling over

A pot boiled over and now it clicks. What do I do?

Most often nothing is broken. A burner that ticks on after a boil-over is wet, and the ticking is the electrode trying to spark through liquid still lying in the recess. Dry it right out, wash the cap and the ring beneath it, and set the cap back level. If it ticks dry and clean, ring Wolf Repair Denver on (720) 575-1433.

As close as this set of pictures gets to a single burner: orifice, electrodes, and the seat the head drops onto.

What makes a boil-over different from ordinary grime is where the liquid ends up. It runs off the burner cap, down the outside of the head and into the recess the electrode stands in, and that recess stays damp for a day after the cooktop has been wiped. The top looks spotless and the burner still ticks.

That is also why drying beats scrubbing. Get the water out of the one place you cannot see, and most of these calls are over before anybody makes them.

How to do it

  1. Turn that burner off and leave it alone

The ticking stops the moment the knob goes back to off, and nothing is gained by letting it run on. The rest of the top is fine; only the burner that took the spill is out of use.

  2. Let the wet parts dry right out

Wolf's troubleshooting is explicit about this: where water has spilled recently, let the area dry completely, and a hair dryer is allowed if you would rather not wait for it.

  3. Wash the cap and the ring beneath it

Cold first. Mild detergent or a spray degreaser, a rinse and a towel. A sugary spill leaves a film that holds damp against the electrode long after the deck around it looks clean.

  4. Set the cap back centred and level

The guide's own word for these sealed burners is that the cap seats flatly. A cap dropped back at an angle puts the gas and the spark out of reach of each other, which an owner reads as a burner gone wrong.

  5. Light it, and give it a minute if it hesitates

If nothing has caught after ten seconds, shut the knob, wait a minute and try once more rather than holding it open. Push the knob in and release it while you are there: it should spring straight back.

Past that point it is a tool-and-meter job. Call Wolf Repair Denver on (720) 575-1433 and we will bring the parts that fault usually needs.

Asked about this one

How long should I leave it before trying again?

A couple of hours in a warm kitchen, or a few minutes with a hair dryer on its low setting held back from the deck. What matters is the recess under the cap being dry, not the cooktop feeling dry to your hand. Sugary liquid takes longer to go than water does.

It lights, but it keeps on ticking afterwards. Is that normal?

No. The spark is meant to stop once the flame has taken, so a burner that lights and goes on ticking has a switch or a module still asking for it. Shut that burner off, use the others, and tell Wolf Repair Denver which position on the top it is when you ring.

Tried it, and it is still doing it?

Say what the flame is doing and the van is loaded for that fault before it leaves. $89 pays for the drive and for finding it, and comes off the bill when you say go ahead.
