Wolf hood loud but the kitchen still fills with smoke: reading airflow, not noise
Noise and capture are different things. Why a Wolf hood can roar and still leave smoke under the ceiling, the five faults behind it, and how to tell a blower problem from a duct problem before you pay for a motor.
Two calls that sound identical arrive from Denver kitchens every week. In the first, the hood barely makes a sound and the kitchen fills with smoke. In the second, the hood is loud enough to interrupt a conversation and the kitchen fills with smoke anyway. The second one is the interesting case, because the noise convinces everybody — including some technicians — that the blower is working and the problem must be something else.
Noise is not airflow. Noise is what happens when a blower cannot move the air it is trying to move.
Why a loud hood can move almost nothing
A blower has a fixed amount of work in it. If the path in front of it is easy — short, straight, smooth, properly sized — most of that work becomes moving air. If the path is difficult, most of it becomes turbulence, vibration and heat instead. The wheel is still spinning at the same speed and drawing similar current, so from the switch nothing looks wrong, and from the kitchen it sounds like a lot is happening.
The things that make a path difficult are unglamorous and almost always installation rather than failure. Flexible duct instead of rigid pipe. Bends stacked close together, or a ninety within a few inches of the blower outlet. A transition that steps down to a smaller diameter because that was what fitted between the joists. A roof or wall cap with a stiff damper that never fully opens. Any one of those costs a fraction of the airflow; three together can halve it.
The five faults we actually find
- A grease-loaded blower wheel. The single most common. Grease builds unevenly on the blades, the wheel goes out of balance, and it moves progressively less air while getting louder. Badly loaded wheels also trip the motor’s thermal cutout, which is why the fault often reads as “runs for twenty minutes then stops”.
- Spent baffles or charcoal. Baffle filters need washing, and they need refitting the right way round — reversed baffles drip grease back onto the range and stop directing air. Charcoal in a recirculating liner is spent long before it looks it.
- Duct geometry. Covered above, and the reason we measure before quoting parts. This is the fault that gets misdiagnosed as a motor most often.
- A capacitor that no longer starts the motor cleanly. The blower hums, struggles up to speed, or starts only at high. Cheap part, easily measured, frequently replaced unnecessarily on a guess when the real problem was the wheel.
- Dust and cottonwood loading, seasonally. In late spring, hood intakes here pick up an astonishing amount of airborne cottonwood and construction dust. It packs into the shroud around the motor rather than the filters, which is not somewhere anyone looks.
What Denver adds to the list
Two things, both local. The first is dryness: cooking here throws less water vapour into the room than it does at sea level, so a hood that is not coping shows itself as smoke and smell rather than as condensation on the cabinets. People therefore notice the problem later, by which point the wheel is thoroughly loaded.
The second is the housing stock. Warehouse-conversion lofts downtown frequently have kitchens on interior walls with no route to the outside at all, so the hood recirculates through charcoal by design. Nothing is broken in those kitchens — the liner is doing all it can — and the honest answer is a maintenance schedule rather than a repair. Meanwhile the older bungalows have hoods vented through whatever route was available decades ago, and we still find the occasional run that terminates in the attic, which is a fire and moisture problem rather than an airflow one.
What to check yourself in ten minutes
Pull the baffles or the mesh filters and hold them up to a light. If light does not pass through the mesh, that alone can be most of your airflow. Wash them in hot water with a degreaser and refit them the way they came out — baffles have a top and a bottom.
With the filters out, look up into the housing at the blower wheel with a torch. Blades that are furred rather than shiny need cleaning, and that is a hands-on job with a brush and degreaser rather than a wipe.
Now put a sheet of kitchen paper across the intake with the hood on high. It should be held flat with reasonable force. If it barely holds, or it holds only in one corner, you have a flow problem rather than a filter problem.
Then go outside and look at the wall or roof cap while somebody runs the hood. The damper should be visibly open. Nests, painted-shut flaps and a damper resting on a screw are all common enough to be worth two minutes of looking.
What we measure, and when a motor is the answer
The order is always the same: filter condition, wheel condition, then flow at the intake, then the duct route from the blower outlet to the cap. Only once those are known does a motor quote make sense, because a new blower fitted to an unchanged bad duct produces a louder version of the same complaint and an unhappy customer.
Where the duct is genuinely the fault, we say so and quote the ductwork rather than a part. Rebuilding a three-bend flexible run in rigid pipe is not a glamorous invoice, but it is the one that halves the noise and doubles the capture, and it is permanent.
Call when the hood is loud and smoke still crosses the kitchen, when it runs and then stops on its own, when grease appears on the range below the liner, or when a downdraft rises part way and stalls. Clean the filters first if they are due — that is free, it takes an evening, and it occasionally solves the whole thing.
Follow-up questions
My hood is rated far above what my range needs. Why is it not coping?
A rating is measured on a test bench with a short straight duct. Fit the same blower to a long flexible run with several bends and a spring-loaded damper and it can deliver a fraction of that figure while making all of the noise. The number on the box describes the blower; what reaches your kitchen is decided by the duct.
Can a recirculating hood in a loft ever really clear smoke?
It can control grease and smell noticeably better than nothing, and with fresh charcoal it makes a real difference to how a kitchen feels after searing. What it cannot do is remove heat and water vapour, because it puts the air back in the room. If you sear often in a loft with no exterior wall, expect to change charcoal far more frequently than the manual suggests.
Is it normal for a downdraft to be quieter than a hood?
It is normal for it to sound different. A downdraft pulls across the cooktop instead of above it, so you hear the air moving at the surface rather than overhead, and it fights rising heat the whole time. Quiet is not the same as effective — if a downdraft is quiet and smoke is still crossing the room, it is not moving enough air.
