Wolf GR488: eight burners and two ovens

Eight sealed burners, no module anywhere on the top and two oven cavities underneath: the GR488 is the simplest of the wide bodies and the one with the most burners to feed. Nearly everything that goes wrong with it is a burner, a valve or a door. Describe which and Wolf Repair Denver can usually name the part on the call. The number is (720) 575-1433.

Wide stainless range with eight control knobs across the fascia, one burner opened at the right to show its electrodes, a black cap and a wrench on the marble counter
A wide range, one burner open Eight knobs along the fascia. A wide range is mostly more of the same hardware, spread over more feet of gas rail.
  1. Eight knobs across the fascia. The rating plate, not the knob count, settles which body this is.
  2. The opened burner, with its electrode standing clear of the base.

If you want to know what the GR488 is for, count the knobs. Eight burners across forty-eight inches is a top built for cooking several things hard at the same time, and the households that chose it over the module versions almost always cook that way.

For repair purposes it is the plainest of the wide bodies. No infrared plate, no ceramic tiles, no second thermostat on the cooktop. What you have is eight sealed burners of one design, eight valves behind eight knobs, and two ovens. When something goes wrong up top, the seven burners that are still fine are the most useful diagnostic tool in the kitchen, because they rule out the supply, the power and the ignition system all at once.

The one thing this body asks for that the narrower ones do not is room. It appears by name in Wolf’s clearance note, and in older Denver kitchens where a range this wide replaced something much smaller, that note is worth reading before the next remodel rather than after it.

What it usually turns out to be

Every figure below is a band, not a quote. The fault is found first, the number is agreed with you second, and nothing is ordered until you have said yes to it.

  • Burners flag when five or six of them are running at once

UsuallyEight burners draw on one supply. Wolf's table wants five inches of water column at the appliance, with seven the minimum on the line that feeds it, so a top that is fine alone and sags in company gets measured rather than argued about.

Quoted from Quoted after the diagnosis

  • Two burners will not light properly after a big clean

UsuallyCaps go back on the burner they came off, and they go back flat. Wolf's first line for poor ignition is to verify the caps are positioned properly, and with eight of them on the counter at once they get shuffled.

Quoted from Igniter or spark module $180–$470

  • A gap shows along the top of the oven door

UsuallyA forty-eight inch door is heavy and it swings thousands of times. When one drops out of square the seal stops meeting the frame evenly, and the hinges are checked before anyone talks about the rope around the opening.

Quoted from Door hinge, glass or seal $280–$720

  • The range shifts or rocks when the door is loaded

UsuallyThe anti-tip device is either not engaged or has never been re-engaged since the range was last pulled out. Wolf requires it in place whenever the appliance is moved, and on a body this heavy that is not a formality.

Still wondering

Why will the second oven not broil?

Because Wolf did not give it a broil setting. The control chart lists the eighteen-inch oven on the forty-eight inch model as running 150 to 500 degrees and nothing else, while broil appears against the main cavity only. It is a baking and roasting box, and a good one.

Does a GR488 need anything special around it?

It is named in Wolf's own clearance note. Where no ventilation hood hangs above the range, the guide asks for forty-two inches from the countertop to combustible materials, and singles out the GR488 and charbroiler models as wanting non-combustible materials instead.

The oven bangs during preheat. Is something broken?

Usually not. Wolf puts that noise down to a cavity expanding and contracting, and a newer oven does it more. What would make it worth a look is a bang that arrives with a smell, a flame that visibly changes, or a noise that starts after years of silence. Ask Wolf Repair Denver if you are unsure.
